Spirituality for Real Life

Looking for a great book for growing in your spiritual life?  I heartily recommend this book by James Martin, SJ.  You might know his name from another of his books My life With the Saints or from a blog tour he did last June with Sr. Julie on A Nuns Life, www.anunslife.org.

Fr. Martin draws on the wisdom of St. Ignatius who literally wrote the book on spiritual growth, The Spiritual Exercises. Martin says, “The Ignatian goal of  ‘finding God in all things’ means that every part of our lives can lead us to God.”   The way of Ignatius is about finding freedom: the freedom to become the person you’re meant to be, to love and accept love, to make good decisions, to experience the beauty of creation and the mystery of God’s love.”

I admit I’m passionate about St. Ignatius. My own spirituality, influenced by internships at the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville, PA and degree work in spirituality and spiritual direction is grounded in his wisdom. That grounding provided a firm foundation for my decision ten years ago to travel six hundred miles across the country, leave friends and family, and transfer to the IHM Sisters of Monroe, MI. For years I had  prayed the daily Examen prescribed by Ignatius, looking back on my day, observing where I had or had not been moving with God.  When it came time to make a big decision I had already learned what led me to God and away from God, so I knew I could trust that God was truly leading me to join the Monroe IHMs.

Ignatius’s words were not meant for the spiritually elite, but for every person seeking to come closer to God. Fr. Martin’s writing style makes Ignatius’s wisdom accessible to all.

Podcast musings – Spanish?

I hope you had a chance to join us for last night’s special podcast celebrating the Day for Consecrated Life.  If not, you can still listen by going to anunslife.org. As you may know there is a beautiful welcoming community that gathers for the podcasts.  I regret missing all that was going on in the chat room last night.  For some reason the Wireless connection wasn’t working where we were.  Of course I went there today and found a lot of substantial as well as fun chatting going on.

I was left with gratitude for the ministry of Sr. Julie and Sister Maxine as well as  appreciation for the support that  listeners and chatters offer each other.  I’m left with a big question also.  Considering the diversity of chatters, would it be good to have a Spanish speaking sister in the chat room? I’m just learning Spanish, so I wouldn’t be much help, but  would you like a Spanish speaking sister LIVE or in the chat room for specific podcasts? Let me know.

A New Year on “A Nun’s Life”

If you are searching sites about discerning a religious vocation you surely are checking the website, www.anunslife.org regularly.  Sr. Julie’s posts are always interesting, insightful and challenging. Yesterday’s post, “Is God calling me?” provides such helpful, provocative questions.  If you haven’t read it yet I can’t encourage you enough to do so. In fact I recommend using her questions as discernment prayer starters.  You might take one or two per day and spend some quality time letting the clarity emerge gradually. Sometimes it’s hard to focus and be quiet so that you can hear where God is leading. Good questions often help.

There are two other reasons why I specially appreciate yesterday’s post.  Sr. Julie made such a good point.  The beginning of a New Year can provide just the right nudge for getting down to business. Markers like a new year help us get to what we want to do but never quite get around to accomplishing. I know the markers of Advent and Lent always add help me  be more serious in my search for God.  And on a lighter note, let’s face it,  the approach of summer often gets us thinking about exercising and losing weight. So it is a good idea to use the movement into a new year to get serious about a next step in discerning your call.

I guess my second reason is closely related.  In any discernment you or I can go around and around in our heads waiting ’til we’re absolutely sure before taking a first step.  Of course that only makes us dizzy and confused. It’s the beginning of a new year. Let’s take that step.
