Prayers for Election time

October 29- A Prayer to End Torture

Prayer: Jesus, tortured  on Calvary, teach us to be in solidarity  with all who are tortured today. Call out to those who torture, ‘Know the evil you have done and repent.’ Call out to the rest of us, ‘What meaning does love have if you allow torture to continue unopposed!’

In the name of the tortured of our world, give us the strength, courage, and will to bring this horror to an end. And may we who vote choose leaders who will do the same and restore the good name of our nation.   Amen

Prayers at Election Time

I just came across a novena of  prayers for election time provided by 8th Day Center for Justice, a Catholic, faith-based NGO for Social Change that I’d like to offer you. To me it provides a refreshing shift away from election argumentation. Do you join me in disgust at the barrage of mud-slinging and truth-bending advertisements to which we are submitted by the media as November 2 draws closer? Instead of going there  let’s join together in prayer for justice, peace, and care for all creation and for leaders that will promote these. ‘Sorry I’m late in sharing the prayers.  On the previous days of the novena there was a Prayer for Peace and a Prayer for All Creation.

October 28- A Prayer for Immigrants & Refugees
.

Prayer: Jesus, you were born in flight and your family fled to Egypt as refugees soon after. We pray for all those who are forced to flee from their homes and homelands due to war, violence, oppression, hunger or economic desperation. Help us and our political leaders to see and serve you in the 12 million undocumented immigrants in our country and to work for a humane and just immigration policy. May we who vote choose leaders who will treat the immigrants and refugees in our midst as you would treat them.  Amen

Celebrating St. Teresa of Avila

I can’t let the feast day of our patron, St. Teresa of Avila pass without mention.  As a community we are rooted in the spirituality of St. Alphonsus Liguori who chose St. Teresa of Avila as a mentor in prayer for his Redemptorist community. In addition, we IHMs appreciate her as a woman of strength and conviction , of passion for God and love of religious life. As Sr. Margaret Brennan said in her reflection this morning, Teresa ” set out not only to restore the original fervor of the nuns, …  but to encourage her sisters and the friars as well to seek the full heights of prayer, lead simple lives of joy in community, and above all. to pray for the church which for her was the living Body of the Risen Christ.”  She left us a legacy and a challenge.
I’ll close with the beautiful words of her bookmark (in Spanish and English).
Nada te turbe,
nada te espante;
todo se pasa,
Dios no se muda.
La pacientia todo lo alcanza.
Quien a Dios tiene nada la falta:
solo Dios basta.

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

Beauty out of loss

This last year’s storms wrought havoc with our trees, many of which were old  and vulnerable to the high winds. It was hard to lose these faithful  friends. However, two of the beautiful trees we lost have taken on new life thanks to the talent and kindness of Kirt Bausman who has carved them with beautiful designs. Because we care about maintaining the diversity of creatures we have created meadows on our property to shelter them and foster their growth (See 02/02/08 post – Controversial Meadows).  Thus the first carving, and the tree on the front of the property displays the IHM symbol and WELCOME proclaiming our desire to welcome all.

“Light” St. Ignatius of Loyola

A friend sent me this video about St. Ignatius today. Narrated by an olive the video gives a different slant on Ignatius’s rich story.  Though “light”  I find it delightful. As you probably know, St. Ignatius wrote the book– literally and figuratively– about growth in relationship with God. His work, The Spiritual Exercises” is used as a primary resource for many spiritual and retreat directors to help  persons to notice and respond to the movements of God in their lives.  He’s a hero of mine from my own prayer experience as well as from working with others in their search for God. Enjoy!  Let me know what you think.
